On January 15, 2019, the House Housing, Community Development & Veterans Committee heard HB 2228 sponsored by Rep. Springer (D-Kirkland), which permits counties to request additional resources to be sent to the counties in preparation for or in anticipation of an emergency that is expected to exceed local capabilities. These emergencies could include fires, landslides, earthquakes, floods, or contagious diseases.

County sheriffs, police, firefighters, and emergency management personnel are on the front line of emergencies in their jurisdictions and first on the scene. However, in order to properly respond to emergencies, they require sufficient resources so that they can prevent emergencies from turning into catastrophes.

How does this bill help?

  • It provides counties legal authority to request resources in anticipation of an emergency that is not currently permitted.
  • Saves the state and local governments millions of dollars in manpower, property loss, health impacts, revenue loss, etc.
  • Prevents unnecessary property loss, negative health impacts, and large scale grief.

Please help us support the passage of HB 2228.
